Classes

Beginners


Skills taught:

The following exercises are covered in beginner’s class:

  • Concept of marker training and timing
  • Charging the mark
  • Leash Safety
  • Food delivery
  • Engagement: Food chase and touch
  • Toy Play
  • Positions: Sit, Drop & Stand
  • Loose lead walking
  • Distraction recall whilst on lead

Skills required to pass beginners:

Standard required for pass to class one:


  • Understanding of marker words, timing and termination cues
  • Understanding & demonstration of how to engage with dog
  • Sit and drop beside and in front on command. Command can be verbal only, hand signal only or command and hand signal (handler preference)
  • Understand concept of stand and how to attempt to get dog into stand
  • Loose lead walking: Must start on left and facing forward, know how to correct if pulling/sniffing and understand that dog should be on left to progress to heeling
  • Distraction recall whilst on lead: Dog must turn and move toward handler, owner must know correct time to reward. Command must only be used once

Class one


Skills taught:

The following exercises are covered in class one:

  • Engagement: Food chase, touch, front, spin, look, middle & leg weaving
  • Sit, drop and stand with increased criteria: adding duration and distance
  • Loose lead walking with right about turns
  • Distracted recall with sit in front on return
  • Social exercises: exposure to different surfaces, leave it, platform, weave poles, tunnels

Skills required to pass class one:

Standard required for pass to class two:


  • Sit & drop at the end of the lead for 20 seconds. Dogs must move into position on first cue, no re-cuing allowed, no breaks accepted.
  • Stand in front for 10 seconds. Dogs must move into position on first cue, no re-cuing allowed, no breaks accepted.
  • Distracted recall from end of lead, dogs must come eagerly on single command and sit on return to handler. No fly-bys.
  • Loose lead walk for 30 seconds with right about turns, dogs must start on left in appropriate position and not constantly pull, sniff the ground or lunge. Two mishaps allowed however no lunges.

Class two


Skills taught:

The following exercises are covered in class two:

  • Walk beside handler in heel position
  • Sit, drop and stand in heel position
  • Sit and drop stay at a distance of at least 2 metres with duration of at least 1 minute. Return around the back of the dog
  • Change of position from sit to a drop whilst handler is in front of the dog
  • Set recall at a distance of at least 5 metres, sit in front of handler
  • Figure 8 and weaving
  • Stand stay at end of lead, return around dog
  • Left and right about turns
  • Fast and slow pace whilst heeling

Skills required to pass class two:

Standard required for pass to class three:


  • Dog to walk beside handler for 1-minute heel pattern including at least one of each of the following; sit, drop, stand, left about turn, right-about turn, left-turn, right-turn, slow pace and fast pace
  • Stand for exam directly in front of dog (instructor only briefly touches dog)
  • Recall from 5 meters
  • 30 second sit stay. The dog must stay in position until released by the handler. No formal return required at this level.
  • 1 minute drop stay. The dog must stay in position until released by the handler. No formal return required at this level.
  • Stand stay at the end of the lead for 10 seconds, with handler returning around the dog

Class three


Skills taught:

The following exercises are covered in class three:

  • Heeling with automatic sits, and commanded stands and drops
  • Fast and slow pace heeling
  • Crate training
  • Hungry bowl
  • Pivots and platform work
  • Sit stays at a distance of at least 5 metres and duration of 1 minute
  • Drop stays at a distance of at least 5 metres and duration of 2 minutes
  • Recall at a distance of at least 12 metres, dog must sit in front of handler
  • Stand for exam including lead up and at the end of the lead, with full return. The dog is not allowed to move any feet.

Skills required to pass class three:

Standard required for pass to class four:


  • Dog to walk beside handler for 2-minute heel pattern including at least 2 of each of the following; sit, drop, stand, left-about turn, right-about turn, left-turn, right-turn, slow pace and fast pace. Dogs must automatic sit with no verbal or hand signal from the handler
  • Formal stand for exam at end of lead, with the dog not moving out of position, including moving paws. The dog is to remain in position for the entirety of the exercise. Until the instructor ends the exercise.
  • Figure 8 in the heel position, with a loose lead
  • Recall from 10 meters, with a front and formal return either the dog returning around the handler or flipping to the left hand sit of the handler and into a sit position.
  • 1 minute sit stay. Must have a full formal return at a distance of at least 5 meters. The dog is to remain in position for the entirety of the exercise. Until the instructor ends the exercise.
  • 2 minute drop stay. Must have a full formal return at a distance of at least 5 meters. The dog is to remain in position for the entirety of the exercise. Until the instructor ends the exercise.

Class four


Skills taught:

The following exercises are covered in class four:

  • Heeling with automatic sits, and commanded stands and drops
  • Fast and slow pace heeling
  • Crate training
  • Hungry bowl
  • Pivots and platform work
  • Sit stays at a distance of at least 5 metres and duration of 1 minute
  • Drop stays at a distance of at least 5 metres and duration of 2 minutes
  • Recall at a distance of at least 12 metres, dog must sit in front of handler.
  • Stand for exam including lead in and at the end of the lead, with full return. The dog is not allowed to move any feet.
  • Retrieve dumbbell
  • Change of position
  • Shaping (2 on 2 off contacts)
  • Tricks

Skills required to pass class four:


  • Standard required for pass to class 5 requires a pass in either Obedience Community Companion Dog in or Rally Obedience Novice

Most instruction is in small classes with owner and dog being trained together as a team.
